Grinko defines his music as “simple melancholic music” and there is a taste and an emotion in his notes that touches one’s heart. You can’t help but wonder what is the secret of this path to the heart. Grinko expresses the reason for this feeling very simply: “I think it’s simplicity.”
Young pianist Evgeny Grinko, who won hearts with his song Valse, continues to travel from city to city within the scope of his Turkey tour. Grinko, most of whose concerts are sold-out, manages to impress people with his music wherever he goes. Grinko, who completed his concert tour in the Aegean, lastly gave a great concert at Harbiye Open Air. Next stops include Balıkesir, Konya, Ordu, Samsun, Trabzon, Mersin, Adana and Gaziantep.
The Russian pianist, who came from a small town called Zhukovsky near Moscow but quickly made his name known all over the world, performs with a large violin family and 5 accordion musicians. In his concerts, Evgeny Grinko shows his skills on the guitar and drums, as well as the piano. The artist, who recently released a short album called Silent Like Water, recorded in Istanbul, is becoming a giant on the stage with her two albums, Cinematic Melodies and Winter Sunshine, full of emotional compositions and a style that takes the listeners on imaginary journeys. We asked the artist, who received great applause with his song Valse, which has been watched more than 10 million times on YouTube, what we were wondering about.
BEING SIMPLE IS ENOUGH
Grinko, who composed his first composition for a punk band he was a member of at the age of 16, cannot believe that these songs belong to him when he looks back, but punk is his first step into music. His transition from punk music to piano to classical music began at the age of 24, when he became interested in minimalist music and learned to play the piano. “Like every teenager, I started music by playing guitar and drums when I was 13-14 years old. Then we formed our first group with our friends.” Grinko uses music to express himself. His journey, which started with punk, continues today with classical music. We ask the reason behind this sharp turn, and he answers: “After my first band disbanded, I wanted to make music on my own, and I found myself at the piano. It became a place where I could express myself in this different field. “Maybe you can see me with different types of music in the future.”

The minimalist approach to music has actually been widely preferred lately. Grinko is one of those who choose this approach. The young artist explains why his music receives such a response from listeners by saying, “I guess people get very tired in daily life, and they want to escape from the complexity of life while listening to music.”
WALSE WAS WRITTEN AT ONCE
Grinko, who says, “The place where I feel most comfortable is when I am at the piano,” carries great traces of the country and culture he grew up in and transfers these to his compositions. “While making music, I am also influenced by other music, but the events around me or the things I am aware of from far away places are also very effective in my composition.” Morning in Pripyat, the closing song of the Cinematic Melodies EP (2009), which Evgeny composed under Zhukovsky and recorded and mixed on his own, tells about the city of Pripyat (Pripyat was built in 1970 for the workers of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant) in Northern Ukraine.
The artist, whose recognition has increased exponentially with his piece called Valse, explains that he composed this work suddenly: “I don’t know why it was so loved. When I play at concerts, it attracts a lot of attention. I think it’s because it’s a very melancholic song. “While I was working on the piano, the intro melody of the song suddenly came to my mind, and the rest came naturally.”
TURKISH AUDIENCE IS SINCERE
Apart from the piano, Grinko also plays guitar and drums on stage, and he is very good at this. Explaining that he played drums because he missed the punk music of the years when he first started playing music, Grinko said, “I mostly use the guitar in songs where stringed instruments are prominent. To strike complementary chords.” says.
Grinko has a special bond with the Turkish audience. “I love my Turkish listeners very much. They are very hot. They show their reactions from the beginning. For example, in Russia people applaud when a song ends, but in Turkey they applaud when a song they like starts. “It seemed very interesting at first, but I got used to it.”
